Why Buy Used IBC Totes?

For the vast majority of applications, a quality used IBC tote performs identically to a brand-new one — at a fraction of the cost. Here’s why thousands of businesses choose pre-owned.

Save 40–70% vs New

Used totes deliver the same liquid storage capacity at dramatically lower cost. Grade A totes are often indistinguishable from new.

Immediate Availability

No lead times or factory wait. We keep hundreds of totes in stock at our Baltimore facility for same-day or next-day pickup.

Environmentally Responsible

Every reused tote is one less container manufactured from virgin materials. Reusing a single IBC saves approximately 33 lbs of plastic.

Proven Durability

IBC totes are built to be reused. The HDPE bottles and steel cages are designed for multiple lifecycles of heavy-duty use.

Detailed Criteria

How We Grade Every Tote

Our grading goes beyond a quick glance. Each IBC tote is evaluated across eight criteria to assign a fair, transparent condition grade.

Hands-On Inspection at Every Step

Our trained technicians physically inspect every valve, gasket, cage bar, and pallet board. We check for UV degradation, interior cleanliness, structural integrity, and leak-free operation. Each tote is photographed and logged into our tracking system with a unique lot number so you can trace the history of every container you purchase.

Common Previous Contents

We always try to identify what was stored in a tote before we acquired it. Here are the most common previous contents we see in our used IBC inventory.

Water & Water-Based Solutions

Purified water, deionized water, and water-based cleaning solutions. These totes are typically in the best condition and are our top Grade A candidates.

Reuse Suitability

Excellent for any reuse application including food-grade

Soaps & Detergents

Liquid dish soap, laundry detergent, industrial degreasers, and cleaning concentrates. The HDPE bottle rinses clean with standard washing.

Reuse Suitability

Great for non-food liquid storage, agriculture, and industrial use

Food-Grade Products

Juice concentrates, cooking oils, vinegar, syrups, glycerin, and food-safe flavorings. These totes carry food-grade certification history.

Reuse Suitability

Grade A totes from food products are ideal for continued food-grade use

Agricultural Chemicals

Liquid fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and soil amendments. These are triple-rinsed and suitable for similar agricultural applications.

Reuse Suitability

Best reused for non-food agricultural applications

Industrial Chemicals

Non-hazardous solvents, coolants, antifreeze, printing inks, and adhesives. Thoroughly cleaned but may retain slight discoloration.

Reuse Suitability

Suitable for industrial storage and non-potable water applications

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Shampoo bases, lotions, hand sanitizer, fragrances, and cosmetic intermediates. Typically very clean with minimal residue.

Reuse Suitability

Often Grade A — excellent for a wide range of reuse applications

We never sell totes that previously held hazardous materials, toxic chemicals, or regulated waste. If we can’t confirm previous contents, the tote is directed to our recycling program instead of being resold.

Real-World Scenarios

How Customers Use Our Totes

Here are specific scenarios from real customers showing how used IBC totes solve problems across different industries.

Grade BAgriculture

Urban Farm Irrigation

A Baltimore urban farm purchased 12 Grade B totes to create a gravity-fed drip irrigation network. Connected with IBC-to-IBC fittings, the system holds 3,300 gallons and waters 40 raised beds without a pump.

Grade AFood & Beverage

Brewery Cleaning Solution Storage

A local craft brewery uses Grade A totes to store CIP (clean-in-place) solutions — caustic soda and peracetic acid. The HDPE bottles resist both chemicals, and the 275-gallon capacity is perfect for their 15-barrel system.

Grade CConstruction

Concrete Admixture Transport

A concrete contractor bought 8 Grade C totes for transporting water-reducing admixtures to job sites. At $50 each, the totes paid for themselves on the first job and have been in service for 2 years.

Grade AFood Production

Maple Syrup Collection

A Maryland maple syrup operation uses Grade A totes (previously stored food-grade glycerin) to collect sap from 500 taps. The 330-gallon size holds a full day of collection from their sugar bush.

Grade BAutomotive Services

Car Wash Soap Storage

An express car wash stores concentrated soap and wax in Grade B totes. The bottom valve connects directly to their dilution system. They replace totes annually and return the old ones through our buyback program.

Grade ADisaster Preparedness

Emergency Water Reserves

A community preparedness group placed Grade A totes at three neighborhood locations for emergency water storage. Each 275-gallon tote provides drinking water for 50 people for over a week.

Grade BHorticulture

Nursery Fertigation System

A plant nursery uses a network of 6 Grade B totes as mixing tanks for liquid fertilizer. Connected to an injector pump, the system delivers precise nutrient ratios to 10,000 container plants.

Grade CTransportation

Fleet Windshield Washer Fluid

A trucking company with 80 vehicles stores bulk windshield washer fluid in Grade C totes. Buying in bulk from the tote saves 60% compared to individual gallon jugs — and the tote has a convenient bottom valve for dispensing.

Our Promise

Inspection Checklist

Before any used IBC tote is listed for sale, it passes through our comprehensive inspection checklist. Here’s exactly what we check so you know what you’re getting.

Reject Rate:Approximately 15% of incoming totes fail our inspection and are directed to recycling rather than resale. We never sell a tote that doesn’t meet our quality standards.

Structural Integrity

Check bottle for cracks, warping, bulging, and wall thinning. Verify cage bars are straight and welds are intact. Inspect pallet for broken boards or structural failure.

Leak Testing

Fill to capacity and inspect all seams, the bottom discharge area, lid seal, and valve connection for any moisture or dripping over a 30-minute observation period.

Valve Function

Operate the discharge valve through full open/close cycles. Check for smooth operation, tight seal in closed position, and no dripping. Test gasket condition.

Lid & Cap Seal

Inspect screw cap threads for cross-threading or damage. Check gasket for compression, cracking, or chemical deterioration. Verify airtight seal when closed.

Interior Cleanliness

Visual inspection via flashlight through the fill opening. Check for residual product, biological growth, mineral deposits, or odor. Grade assigned based on findings.

UV Degradation Assessment

Evaluate HDPE bottle for UV yellowing, brittleness, and surface chalking. Tap test for material integrity. Heavily UV-damaged totes are rejected from sale.

Previous Contents Identification

Read original product labels, check SDS (Safety Data Sheet) markings, and assess residual odor to identify what was stored. Totes with hazardous history are rejected.

Forklift Compatibility

Verify pallet entry points accept standard fork widths. Confirm the cage lifting bars are straight and rated for crane or forklift handling when full.

Compatibility

HDPE Material Compatibility Chart

HDPE is compatible with a wide range of liquids, but not all. Use this chart to verify that your intended contents are safe for storage in an HDPE IBC tote.

Excellent Compatibility

  • Water (potable & non-potable)
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Most acids (acetic, citric, phosphoric)
  • Alkaline solutions (sodium hydroxide to 50%)
  • Alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol)
  • Glycols (ethylene, propylene)
  • Liquid fertilizers
  • Food-grade oils and syrups
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to 30%)
  • Bleach (sodium hypochlorite to 12.5%)

Limited Compatibility

  • Hydrochloric acid (< 37%)
  • Sulfuric acid (< 70%)
  • Nitric acid (< 50%)
  • Ammonia solutions
  • Essential oils (test first)
  • Petroleum-based lubricants
  • Xylene (short-term only)
  • Some ketones (MEK — short-term)

Verify concentration and temperature. Contact us for specific guidance.

Not Compatible

  • Gasoline and diesel fuel
  • Toluene and benzene
  • Concentrated nitric acid (> 50%)
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Turpentine
  • Bromine
  • Fluorine gas
  • Concentrated oxidizers

These substances will degrade HDPE. Use stainless steel IBCs or specialty containers instead.

Environmental Impact

Reusing Saves More Than Money

When you buy a used IBC tote instead of a new one, you’re directly reducing the demand for raw material extraction and energy-intensive manufacturing.

33 lbsOf HDPE plastic saved per tote reused
75%Less energy than manufacturing new
0 lbsSent to landfill when you buy used

At Baltimore IBC Recycling, sustainability isn’t a marketing buzzword — it’s the foundation of our business. Every tote we sell extends a container’s useful life and keeps plastic out of the waste stream.
